Mission statement

Logo

The society provides a forum for an exchange of scientific knowledge and views to all its members from various branches of science involved in the study of behaviour. Views from different professional backgrounds can enrich our understanding. The aim of the society is to advance behavioural science in basic and applied ethology, encourage research and other contributions to knowledge relating to behaviour but also to behavioural problems in the farm, companion and free-living animals, and to promote communication of this knowledge.

MRes studentship in Genetic Variation in Feeding Behaviour (University of Edinburgh/SAC).

An exciting 1-year postgraduate studentship is available in Edinburgh from autumn 2006 for a study at the Department of Animal Nutrition and Health of SAC. The studentship is in collaboration with the livestock breeding industry and is open to EU residents.

Feeding behaviour traits of pigs in relation to genotype and health status R&D/AHG/204/06; one year MRes studentship with a tax-free stipend of L10,000. Individual feeding behaviour data have been collected with large numbers of pigs of contrasting genetic lines. The objectives of the project are (i) to characterise the short-term feeding behaviour of pigs and identify relevant feeding behaviour traits, and (ii) to test hypotheses about the manner in which genotype and health status affect these traits.

Applicants for all studentships will have, or will expect to gain, at least an upper second class honours degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. animal science, biology, genetics, data mining). The student will be registered for a higher degree at the University of Edinburgh . The stipend will be paid by SAC.

An application pack is available from Human Resources, Scottish Agricultural College , West Mains Road , Edinburgh EH9 3JG . Tel: (0131) 5354343 (answering machine), Fax: (0131) 5354322, HumanResources@sac.co.uk , or our website http://www.sac.ac.uk
